Fun & Games December 19 - January 12, 2014

Ivan Lebedev, Mikhail Magaril

“Fun and Games” presents new collaborative works by Mikhail Magaril and Ivan Lebedev. In this new series of works, the artists keep pushing the boundaries of traditional photography as it overlaps with other forms of visual art, especially painting. Using old vintage photographs from the Soviet era, then whimsically altering the images by hand-drawing in acrylic, and using foil on board as a finishing surface, they purposefully blur the fundamental difference between photography and painting. In the artists’ own expression, this results in the exploration of the three underpinnings of time characteristic of photographic images: fixation of a concrete moment, time-flow within the frame, and the marks of natural wear on the physical printed form of the image and its texture.
